The U.S. Embassy Ljubljana Speaker Program is one of our most popular youth engagement programs. Invitations to visit schools throughout Slovenia increase every year, and we try to visit as many as we can! This year, we have already visited two schools in September.
Our new Ambassador, Lynda Blanchard, was quick to volunteer to visit Slovenian schoolchildren! Ambassador Blanchard visited OŠ Dragomelj to meet with 50 curious students, and their dedicated and friendly teachers and headmaster. She first introduced herself, her family and her career as a business executive and international humanitarian. She enjoyed introducing her hometown of Montgomery, Alabama and the rest of the state. The students learned about the museums, beautiful natural resources, and delicious food in Alabama. And in the 50th anniversary year of the Apollo 11 moon landing, they also learned about how the path to the Moon has run through Alabama since the earliest days of the U.S. space program. The Ambassador also told the students about her favorite things in Slovenia (so far!), including the beautiful hiking, the amazing people, and the delicious food. Ambassador Blanchard was happy to answer all of the student’s questions, that ranged from her personal life, her career, and being a diplomat.
In another visit to Cerklje, Chief of the Office for Defense Cooperation, Major Jonathan Zebre visited OŠ Cerklje ob Krki to talk to the students about U.S. culture and life in the United States. The students were not only enthusiastic about communicating with Major Zebre but were also entertained by his knowledge of the beautiful Slovenian language!
