Learn, exchange, grow, and serve. The U.S. Department of State offers many programs for non-U.S. citizens wishing to come to the U.S. for cultural, educational, or professional exchange. These programs are augmented by local opportunities in countries around that world that allow non-U.S. citizens to explore U.S. culture and the English language. The Cultural Affairs Office within the Public Affairs Section manages the mission’s educational and cultural programs. Its aim is to promote mutual understanding between Slovenians and Americans. Cultural Affairs works closely with Slovenian institutions to organize exchanges, workshops, lectures, and presentations by U.S. academics, specialists, writers and artists. The programs cover a wide range of interests including economics, international relations, democracy building, American studies, environment, law, commerce, and the arts. Cultural Affairs also organizes American fine arts exhibits and public performances by American artists, musicians, and theater groups.
The United States supports international education and welcomes foreign students and exchange visitors. Before applying for a visa, students and exchange visitors must be accepted by their schools or program sponsors.

Traveling to the United States is the best way to get to know America. But short of that, you can get the flavor of America right here in Slovenia. The U.S. Embassy in Ljubljana has established a Speaker Program, offering your group the chance to hear from Americans first-hand on the topics of interest to you.
The U.S. Embassy in Slovenia sponsors various exchange programs in conjunction with the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) . People-to-people exchanges enhance mutual understanding between the people of the U.S. and other nations.
Student Entrepreneurship & Internship Program SEI

The Fulbright Program is the U.S. Government’s flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. It operates in more than 160 countries worldwide and has provided more than 380,000 participants with the opportunity to study, teach or conduct research, and exchange ideas.
The Fulbright Specialist Program provides Fulbright grants abroad for qualified U.S. scholars and professionals to complete short-term projects lasting 2-6 weeks. Central to this program is the original Fulbright purpose of advancing mutual understanding, establishing long-term cooperation, and creating opportunities for institutional linkages.
Fulbright Student Program for (Pre-Doctoral) Visiting
Up to five 9-month grants (depending on availability of funding) are available in the Student Visiting Research category for candidates currently enrolled in a PhD Program in Slovenia or in one of the EU countries. The Fulbright Student Visiting research program is a non-degree pre-doctoral award for students who intend to incorporate part of their research conducted in the United States in their PhD thesis. Fulbright Student candidates are required to complete their PhD upon completion of their Fulbright grant in the United States.
Fulbright Visiting Scholar (Post-Doctoral) Program
Between four and five one-semester grants (depending on availability of funding) are available in the Visiting Scholar category. The Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program is a non-degree post-doctoral award program for junior and senior researchers, university lecturers and experts from academic and research institutions in Slovenia.
Moving onto financial aspects – one big question is “how can I afford studying in the US?” Education in the United States may appear expensive, but it offers excellent value for the money invested. It is important to start financial planning at least 12 months before you plan on starting college in the US.
Every year thousands of second level students go to the U.S. to spend three, five or ten months at – mostly public – high schools. Most programs are designed for pupils between the ages of 15 and 18. Pupils live with an American host family and thereby experience life in America and the people of American from a very special perspective.
The United States does not have a national school system. Nor, with the exception of the military academies, are there schools run by the federal government. But the government provides guidance and funding for federal educational programs in which both public and private schools take part, and the U.S. Department of Education oversees these programs.
The following is a catalog of university cooperation agreements between Slovene and U.S. institutions of higher education. Some involve student exchanges between universities, where students are selected based on competition or nomination, while others operate primarily at the faculty level. If you are interested in participating in one of these programs, you should contact an exchange coordinator from one of the listed exchanges or speak with a faculty member at your university.

The Public Affairs Section of the United States Embassy in Ljubljana represents the Embassy vis-a-vis the Government of Slovenia in official business related to culture; promotes the values and culture of American society; conducts information and cultural programs on behalf of the U.S. Government, presenting U.S. history, society, art and culture in all of its diversity to overseas audiences; and administers United States government involvement in cultural activities between Slovenia and the United States.
The Embassy continues to offer grants for well-conceived and managed projects that strengthen ties between the United States and Slovenia. Eligible topics for projects are broadly defined to include democracy and human rights, security and defense issues, and economic and business development. Successful proposals will strengthen understanding of the United States, including its society, politics, and values and support a priority theme listed below. New grantees with relevant, impactful proposals may be given preference over previous grantees.
