How to Obtain Vital Records issued in the U.S.

Birth, Marriage, and Death Certificates

These documents are issued and maintained by the individual U.S. states and the process to obtain certified copies varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.  We recommend contacting the Vital Records Office for the state that issued the document.  If you plan to use your certificate outside the U.S., like for example, if you wish to present your U.S. birth certificate to the Slovene authorities in order to get married in Slovenia, you will need to obtain an apostille.  For instructions on obtaining an apostille, please check with the office of the Secretary of State for your particular U.S. state.  Note: an apostille is not required if the document is to be submitted to the U.S. government, such as to apply for a U.S. passport.

Divorce Decrees

These documents are issued and maintained by the court that heard the case.  If you need another copy of your divorce decree, you will need to contact the court.

Records Maintained by the U.S. Department of State

Certified copies of a Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Report of Death of an American Citizen can both be obtained through the State Department in Washington DC.  Alas, we do not maintain copies here at the Embassy.

How to Obtain Vital Records issued in Slovenia

Birth, Death, and Marriage Certificates

These documents are issued and maintained by local offices in Slovenia called the Upravna enota (the Administrative Unit, somewhat like a County Clerk’s Office in the United States).   Contact information for your local Upravna enota is available online.   If you will be using your Slovene certificate for some process in the United States or at the Embassy, we recommend requesting the international version of the certificate, as it is issued in 8 languages including English.

Divorce Decrees

These documents are issued and maintained by the court that heard the case.  If you need another copy of your divorce decree, you will need to contact the court.
